Knee surgery brings a passion for treating the knee to obtain the best possible function, even when the internals are damaged or arthritic. Non-surgical and surgical treatments include ligament reconstruction, meniscus repair or resection, cartilage repair, injection therapy and joint replacement — all of which are aimed at keeping you mobile and active.

Mr Chatenya Chauhan has been a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon since 2002 and sees knee patients at private clinics in Southend-on-Sea, Leigh-on-Sea, Chelmsford and London.

Treatments for the knee

ACL reconstruction

When the anterior cruciate ligament tears the knee becomes prone to giving way. Mr Chauhan uses minimally invasive techniques, including refined hamstring tendon harvesting designed to reduce tissue trauma and support faster rehabilitation.

Knee injections

Arthrosamid hydrogel, hyaluronic acid (Ostenil), platelet-rich plasma and steroid injections, compared side by side so you can see which suits your symptoms.

Arthroscopy, meniscus and cartilage

Keyhole surgery to assess and treat the inside of the knee, including meniscal repair or resection and cartilage-preserving procedures aimed at delaying or avoiding joint replacement.

Knee replacement

Partial and total knee replacement, including robot-assisted knee replacement for suitable patients, allowing improved accuracy of implant positioning, alignment and soft-tissue balance.

Why Mr Chauhan for your knee

After graduating from Dundee University, Mr Chauhan lectured in anatomy and physiology at Sheffield University, undertook orthopaedic training in the Yorkshire region, and completed fellowship training in joint replacement and arthroscopic surgery at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham, where he was the Zimmer Fellow.

During his training his research interests took him to Smith & Nephew’s research facility in York, with collaborative work involving University College London, contributing to the early validation and clinical application of cartilage imaging techniques. He went on to establish and develop a specialist arthroscopic knee service in Southend-on-Sea, where he was appointed Consultant and continues to practise.

His work has centred on joint-preserving strategies — relieving pain, restoring function, and delaying or avoiding joint replacement where appropriate. He has been a member of ISAKOS, the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine, for over a decade, and is a member of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee.

Knee surgery is one of the most cost-effective, life-changing operations in medicine — but the right operation at the right time matters more than the quickest one.

Non-surgical options first

Not every painful knee needs an operation. For osteoarthritis and joint pain Mr Chauhan offers a range of evidence-based injection therapies. Arthrosamid is a one-time injectable hydrogel that can give long-lasting relief; hyaluronic acid (Ostenil) lubricates and cushions the joint; platelet-rich plasma (PRP) uses your own blood to support healing; and steroid and local anaesthetic injections give rapid short-term relief during a flare-up.

What to expect

1. Consultation

A full history and examination, an honest discussion of how much the knee is limiting you, and time to ask everything you want to ask.

2. Imaging and plan

X-rays, and where needed an MRI scan, reviewed with you so that you can see what is happening inside the joint before anything is decided.

3. Treatment and recovery

Injection, arthroscopic surgery, ligament reconstruction or joint replacement, followed by a rehabilitation plan and follow-up appointments with Mr Chauhan himself. Rehabilitation does as much for the final result as the operation.
